Choir rehearsals are rigorous. Attention and discipline prevail. Vocal quality is emphasized (unison or two-to-three part harmony), along with accuracy, pitch of songs, and dynamics. Memorizations of the lyrics are a must. In addition, poise, confidence and stage presence, which includes facial expressions matching the mood of the song with no scratching or fidgeting are developed and learned.
The Honolulu Boy Choir is not a full time choral school like the Vienna Boys Choir Academy. We do not have the luxury of providing a full time choral education and experience for your boy. We are limited to generally two one-and-a-half hour rehearsals each week. However, in such a limited time, we are committed to providing general choral standards to include:
- Singing on pitch and in rhythm with appropriate timbre, diction, dynamics,
articulation and posture while maintaining a steady tempo.
- Singing accurately with good breath control throughout the vocal ranges.
- Singing with expression and technical accuracy from memory.
- Singing music written in unison or two-to-three parts.
- Limited sight-reading of music, accurately and expressively.
As such, we expect the following from each boy:
- Be a team player!
- Be on time, all the time!
- Be prepared! Know your music. Have your lyrics memorized.
- Sit or stand with a proper posture!
- Maintain good vocal health with a good vocal warm-up!
- Make each rehearsal an enjoyable and rewarding experience!
- Pay attention! Listen, listen, and listen! Be a good listener!
- Sing proud! Be happy! Smile!
